If you have lived on IRB for more than a season, you already know the beach access points and the parking rules on 13th Avenue. What has shifted this year is the rhythm of the weekend itself. A handful of new anchors have quietly rewired where locals start Saturday, where they end it, and which weeknights are worth leaving the house.
The block is physically changing
Two things happened on Gulf Boulevard between last summer and this one, and both of them are worth knowing about even if you never eat out.
Grove Surf + Coffee, the St. Pete Beach shop that survived Hurricane Helene's storm surge, expanded north. The new Grove Surf Cafe opened at 1309 Gulf Boulevard in a space that previously housed Salt Public House and shares the same building with the Nekton Surf Shop. The cafe runs its own commercial kitchen instead of leaning on the original shop's coffee-and-pastry model, and it holds a beer and wine license. Hours are Wednesday through Sunday from 8am-3pm, with an expansion into afternoons and a tapas menu in the plans.
The other change is across the street from The Original Crabby Bill's, where the old Gulf Towers Motel used to sit. Prometheus purchased the vacant parcels at 400, 404, and 408 Gulf Boulevard for $16 million from Dr. Kiran Patel, according to a deed recorded on Tuesday. The 0.97-acre property, which is located across from the original Crabby Bill's, was formerly home to the 45-key Gulf Towers Motel, which was demolished in early 2023. Before that sale, the site had been marketed as an eight-unit condo community called Sai Ocean Front Residences, with pre-construction sales pricing starting at $6 million per unit. Whatever gets built there will define the sightline south of 4th Avenue for the next decade. If you walk that stretch, watch it.
The second-Saturday reset
The single biggest change to the IRB weekend calendar is one most residents still describe as "that thing at Crabby Bill's."
Rock the Rocks runs May 9 through August 8, 2026, occurring monthly on the second Saturday from 12:00 to 10:00 pm at 401 Gulf Blvd. Expect live music all day, 20+ local vendors from 12-7PM, and food and drink specials. It is free. The next one is Saturday, August 8, and it is the last of the season, which matters because the fall calendar on Gulf Boulevard thins out fast once the snowbirds haven't arrived yet.
If you have been treating Crabby Bill's as the tourist option and skipping it, the second Saturday is the day to reconsider. The vendor mix leans local, and the live music runs long enough that you can drop in after the beach and stay through dinner.
Where the weeknight regulars actually go
Weekend nights on Gulf Boulevard skew loud and full. Weeknights are where you get the neighborhood back. Three places anchor the mid-week rotation, and each one has a specific night that is worth planning around.

The overlooked pick on that list is Monstah Lobstah. Forty years in the same building on a barrier island is not a small thing. If you have out-of-town family arriving in August and you want a booking that is not going to require a Crabby Bill's-length wait, that is where to send them.
The water half of the day
This is the part of the calendar that catches newer residents off guard.
The City of Indian Rocks Beach reminds boaters to observe slow speed manatee zones April 1 through November 15. That window covers essentially the entire useful boating season on the intracoastal side. If you moved here from a market where seasonal zones are advisory, they are not advisory here. Plan trips out of the pass with the throttle discipline built in, especially on weekends when FWC coverage is heaviest.
For a shorter reset that does not involve a boat, the Indian Rocks Beach Nature Preserve sits off of Gulf Boulevard between 9th Avenue and 10th Avenue. It is free, shaded, and small enough to walk in fifteen minutes if you are trying to get a dog out of the mid-afternoon sun without driving to Kolb Park.
Speaking of Kolb Park: if you are heading to Grove Surf Cafe on a Saturday morning, park there. There is free parking at Kolb Park baseball field and skate park along the east, west, and south sides of the block, plus limited on-street parking on 13th and 14th avenue. The lot Grove shares with Nekton Surf Shop fills first, and several of those spaces are marked for Nekton only.
Rainy afternoons and the civic-life stuff
Summer weather on the Gulf coast is not subtle. When the 3pm storm rolls in, the reflex is to drive to Largo. There are three closer options that residents underuse.
The Beach Art Center sits about a fifth of a mile from Grove Surf Cafe and runs a steady rotation of adult classes, kid workshops, and gallery shows. The IRB Library's Florida Explorers series is aimed at families with young kids and is genuinely worth registering for in advance. Sessions are scheduled for Saturday, August 22, September 19, and October 17, 2026 at 11:00 am, each celebrating the local marine ecosystem with a monthly theme from sharks to sea stars. Participation is free, but registration is required through the Friends of the IRB Library.
For grown-up programming, the Civic Auditorium is the room to watch. Upcoming dates include Friday, July 24, Saturday, August 22, and Friday, August 28, 2026, at the Civic Auditorium. The city posts full schedules on its calendar page.
One more thing worth registering for if you rent out a unit, or are thinking about it. Owners renting property for overnight or short-term stays are required to submit an Annual Vacation Rental Registration (VRR) Application. The city has been consistent about enforcing that, and it is the kind of paperwork that tends to lapse quietly between owners.
The rest of the summer, in dates

If you look at that list against the same window last year, the density is up. Part of that is Rock the Rocks maturing into a real monthly draw. Part of it is Grove Surf Cafe pulling foot traffic toward the 13th Avenue block that used to go quiet by 10am. The neighborhood has more to do in August 2026 than it did in August 2024, and most of it is walkable from the beach access points you already use.
The overarching point: IRB in the back half of summer is not a place you have to leave in order to find something new. The updates are already on the block. You just have to know which Saturday they land on.
