If you have lived in Sarasota through more than a couple of summers, you know the old shape of July. The snowbirds are gone, the good tables open up, and the calendar thins out to fireworks, a circus matinee, and whatever the theaters are running in repertory. That version of summer is still here in outline. What has changed, and what is worth paying attention to as a resident, is where the anchor points sit on the map. A cluster of openings around University Town Center and a small resurrection on North Washington Boulevard have pulled the center of gravity in two directions at once. A week built around the new anchors looks materially different from a week built around the old ones.
This is a rundown for people who already live here. No relocation math, no beach-day primer. Just what is new, what is worth the drive, and which dates are worth blocking.
The map moved north, toward Cattlemen
The stretch of Cattlemen Road behind UTC has been absorbing new tenants at a pace that outruns the usual "coming soon" chatter. Three of them opened close enough together to change how a weeknight dinner decision plays out.
Mistero 1 Pizzeria, the Miami-born concept from chef Renato Viola, opened in June 2026 at 5231 University Pkwy Suite 111 inside The Market at UTC, bringing five-point star-shaped pies, a burrata bar, calzones, and a Nutella pizza built on dough proofed 72 hours with imported Italian flour. Star Luca with ricotta and the coffee-inflected Paolo are the ones people are ordering twice.
A few doors over on Cattlemen, Blu Kouzina, the St. Armands Circle Greek restaurant, opened its second location at 295 N Cattlemen Rd Suite 4 in March 2026, which quietly solved the parking problem that has always come with dinner on the Circle in season. On the same block, Kitchen Social, a Nashville-born fast-casual chain, took the former Rusty Bucket space at 257 N Cattlemen Rd for its first Florida location, opening in March 2026 with smash burgers, chicken sandwiches, loaded bowls, and craft cocktails. And for a morning stop before an errand run, Peachey's Baking Co opened a second brick-and-mortar at 999 Cattlemen Rd Unit E in March 2026, expanding the Amish-style sourdough doughnut and soft-pretzel operation into a 1,480-square-foot space.
The practical takeaway is not that any one of these is the best meal in town. It is that four openings in a six-month window inside a mile of one another means UTC is now a real neighborhood dining node, not a mall food court with a Cheesecake Factory attached. If you live east of I-75, that is a shift. If you live west of it, it is worth one drive to reset your mental map.
Meanwhile, a Sarasota classic came back
The counterweight to the UTC cluster is a single address that most locals thought was finished. The Hob Nob Drive In at 1701 North Washington Boulevard, a Sarasota original since 1957, closed in 2024 after 67 years and has reopened under new ownership, keeping the black-and-white stripes, the counter ordering, and a focused menu of smash burgers, chicken tenders, onion rings, fries, and milkshakes. It is deliberately not trying to be more than it was. For a certain kind of Sarasotan, that is the entire point.
Across town in Southside Village, Alma de España, meaning Soul of Spain, opened at 1830 S. Osprey Ave. Suite 104 in the former Ka Papa Cuisine space, serving Spanish tapas and grill dishes under chef-owner Elier Rodriguez, a Cuban native who graduated from Le Cordon Bleu in Atlanta. Southside Village also lost one of its fine-dining anchors this year, and the replacement is already scheduled. Adeline, the New American restaurant at 1920 Hillview St. that rebranded from Meliora in late 2024, closed October 4 after what co-owner Edward Zaki described as a tough summer of extreme heat, lingering hurricane impacts, and fewer international visitors. Zaki, who also owns 1592 Wood Fired Kitchen & Cocktails and Lucky 8, plans to reopen the space as Mimi, a more casual and affordable restaurant and cocktail lounge, in November. If your dinner rotation ran through Adeline, the Mimi opening is the date to hold.
The civic quiet-launch on Circus Boulevard
Restaurants get the headlines, but the summer's most consequential local addition is a park most residents have driven past without registering. The City of Sarasota will host a ribbon cutting for The Nature Park Phase One on Monday, July 13, 2026 at 1000 Circus Blvd, following the park's initial opening in December 2023. Phase One is the part that turns the site from a place you notice on the way somewhere into a place you go on purpose. Worth a Monday morning walk if you are within a few miles.
The standing summer anchors, with dates
The new openings sit on top of a calendar that residents already know but often underuse. If you build a week around any two of the following, you have done better than most:
- Summer Circus Spectacular at The Ringling, running July 7 through August 8, 2026.
- SKYLINE Pool Parties at Art Ovation Hotel, recurring July 18 through September 12, 2026.
- Songbirds of the Seventies at Florida Studio Theatre, July 18 through September 6, 2026, with Dog Mom running July 18 through July 26.
- Marvin: A Marvin Gaye Revue at Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, July 18 through July 24, 2026.
- One Year Cooler, the anniversary party at Dog Bar Sarasota, July 18, 2026.
- Taste of Maso Tuesdays at Masō & Swift Lounge, recurring July 7 through September 29, 2026.
- Laser Light Nights at The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature in Bradenton, Thursday through Saturday nights May 21 through September 5, with shows at 7 and 9 p.m. for $15.
Two of these need a small note. Taste of Maso Tuesdays is the kind of running promotion locals dismiss as tourist bait and then realize, three visits in, is the best weekday small-plates deal in the county. And the Skyline Pool Parties at Art Ovation are not a museum stroll. The room is loud and bright by design. Pack accordingly.
What Savor Sarasota tells you about the room
One data point puts the rest in perspective. This year marks Savor Sarasota's 21st anniversary, and 55 local restaurants had already signed up to participate, with more to come. From June 1 through June 14, dozens of participating restaurants throughout Sarasota County offer prix fixe lunches for $25 per person and dinners for $45 per person, with many offering upgrades like higher-end signature dishes and special cocktail or wine pairings. The relevant number is 55. A regional restaurant week that fields 55 committed kitchens in a county this size is not a promotion that needs Sarasota Magazine to keep it alive. It is a signal that summer, once the dead quarter, is now a business model. Which is why the pace of openings in March, April, and June of this year is not an accident.
How a resident week actually stacks up
A workable July week, given all of the above:
Tuesday, small plates at Masō during Taste of Maso. Wednesday, Mistero 1 for the Star Luca and a walk around The Market. Thursday, Florida Studio Theatre for Songbirds of the Seventies or Dog Mom depending on the mood. Friday, Skyline at Art Ovation if you have the energy, or Dog Bar's One Year Cooler if July 18 lands right. Saturday morning, Peachey's for a doughnut, then the Nature Park after the July 13 opening. Saturday night, Alma de España for tapas or Hob Nob for a burger, depending on which version of Sarasota you feel like being. Sunday, the Summer Circus Spectacular at The Ringling with anyone visiting from out of town.
None of that requires the beach, though the beach is still there. None of it requires season, either, which is the quiet part worth saying out loud. The people who treat summer as the off-months are working from a calendar that is three years out of date.
